Carroll County's events and people have been the focus of a number of newspapers since the county was founded in 1838. One of the early newspapers, the Carrollt...on Democrat, was founded in 1868, just three years after the end of the Civil War. In 1892, another competitor was founded, the Carrollton News. In 1930, the two papers merged to become The News-Democrat, which continues to cover Carroll County, its cities and its citizen every Wednesday. At The News-Democrat, we strive for excellence. Our hard work has won us numerous awards for writing, photography, advertising and graphic design from the Kentucky Press Association and from our parent company, Landmark Community Newspapers Inc., based in Shelbyville, Ky. Our goal is not just to provide our readers with all the news and information that is important to the community, but also to serve our community. Several members of our staff are involved in local organizations, such as Rotary Club of Carrollton, the Main Street Program, Chamber of Commerce, Port William Historical Society and Carroll County Arts Board. Staff members also have volunteered to work with students in Carroll County Schools and Christian Academy of Carrollton – talking about journalism as a career, mentoring or helping with student newspapers. Operating with a small staff, The News-Democrat also welcomes help from our readers. Readers are encouraged to submit community news and photos, and letters to the editor. We also welcome anyone with a flair for writing and photography to contact us if they are interested in helping to cover community news as freelancers.
